General Information
Schedule
Level I
Nov. 1-2 9:00 am.-5:00 pm.
Level II
Nov. 3. 1:30 am. -5:00 pm.
Nov. 4 9:00 am.- 5:00 pm.
Nov. 5 9:00 am.-12:30 pm.Nov. 6-7 9:00 am.- 5:00 pm.
Doors will open 20 minutes before the training time. Come early to get settled, get yourself some tea or coffee and be ready to start promptly.
It is important both for your sequential learning and for the feeling of community that builds with the group that you be on time and attend the full training. If you are from the local area, it is tempting at times to let other important matters take priority and come “just” an hour late or leave “just” an hour early. This is disruptive for everyone. Please plan ahead so as to get the most benefit from your training opportunity and to respect the group as a whole: trainer, assistants, and fellow participants.
CEUs NBCC(National Board for Certified Counselors) CEUs are available for a small fee. Just ask.
Location
The training will be at Gina’s home in Timonium. See the next page for directions. Parking is ample; feel free to come to the top of the driveway, or park on the street if you want to go out for lunch.
Gina does have dogs. If you have allergies, call Gina at 410-560-1170 for details.
Emergencies
Call Gina’s at 410-560-1170 for emergency contact. We ask that cell phones be turned off during the training hours. They are, of course, permitted during breaks and lunch, though we encourage you to stay focused and ‘take care of business’ at the end of the day.
Food
Coffee, tea, water and snacks will be provided for breaks and at lunchtime. You are welcome to eat at the house for lunch. You may bring a lunch with you, and use the fridge. Or you may choose to go out to lunch; there are a number of places within a two mile radius, and we’ll be happy to make recommendations and give you directions. We will break for 1 ¼ hours.
While we will try to stick to a scheduled time for lunch, we will honor the discussion we are having and break at what seems like a good time. Please do not promise anyone you will call or be available by phone at a particular time.
General Recommendations
- Advance reading: You will receive your training manual about a week in advance of the training, and I ask that you read through it before we begin. You might also wish to read the newest addition to the field, Wendy Sullivan and Judy Rees’ very readable book, Clean Language: Revealing Metaphors and Opening Minds. The book written by the developers of the Symbolic Modeling process, Penny Tompkins and James Lawley, is Metaphors in Mind: Transformation Through Symbolic Modeling. While it’s a book I return to again and again, it’s more academic, less user friendly than Wendy and Judy’s, and I recommend it for after you’ve had the training. Both books are available through Gina’s website, www.miningyourmetaphors.com under Links and Resources. Instead of or in addition to reading a book, you might also find it helpful to poke around Penny and James’ extensive and wonderful website, www.cleanlanguage.co.uk. Under Applications are many articles you’d likely find interesting.
- Plan on about 30 minutes of homework each night—to review the manual for the next day, update your maps, and practice using review sheets. If you practice a bit to cement the day’s learning, you’ll be better ready to add the next layer of learning the next day.
- Plan to devote your full attention to the training, and leave the half day breaks before and during Level II as time for rest and integration. In the past, participants who have tried to use the time to see clients, run groups, attend meetings, etc. report feeling overwhelmed. Even if you are from the local area, consider the training like a full time retreat learning experience.
- Wear comfortable clothes. November in Baltimore can be warm or cool, so be prepared with layers. If the weather is nice, you may want a light jacket to walk at break time or sit in the garden for lunch.
Transporation
Those of you staying at the Sheraton North in Towson or Crowne Plaza in Timonium can request free shuttle service to the training site. You’ll only have to tip the driver. Gina can also help with hotel suggestions. Staying at another hotel and don’t have a car?
